Nigeria's minister of Health says careless doctors are to blame for spread of lassa fever

Nigeria

Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole has blamed the spread of lassa fever on lax safety measures of health personnel in the country. He said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Ebonyi state Governor, David Umahi following the death of 4 Medical health workers from lassa fever.

He said:

“What is worrisome is that when doctors and healthcare workers become infected, then the country is in danger because everyone that will go and meet that doctor or nurse is at risk. Lassa fever requires close contact between the blood of an infected person and healthcare workers looking out for him. Once you wear gloves, wear protective gown, you can’t have Lassa fever. but we have discovered that doctors and nurses treat Lassa as if it is just ordinary flu or malaria, but it is not."

"Today DINNødhjælp/ACAEDF Director and Leader David together with our Education Officer Bassey and Child Development Officer Orok saved the lives of these 3 beautiful children.

It’s been a very emotional day. We wanted to bring 4 children to safety at “Land of Hope” but one child was killed even before the team left our center

But now I’m just so happy that David and our team were able to save: Idara, a 7-year-old girl accused of killing her father.

Nsidibe, 6 year old boy and his brother, Ezekiel, 5 years old. Accused of killing their mother.

Superstition is NOT an African thing. From the late 15th century to the late 18th century a wave of persecution washed across parts of Europe. Tens of thousands of people were executed for witchcraft.

'Africa must speedily establish a single market to create more jobs and reduce poverty' - President Buhari

The President made the call while presenting Nigeria’s position in favour of the Report on the establishment of a Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) and related issues presented by President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic, during the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to President Buhari, “It is Nigeria’s position that as African leaders and principal architects of our Union, we must now speed up action to conclude the negotiations and establish the CFTA.”

Noting that the continent has missed the timeline set by the African Union (AU) in January 2012 to establish the CFTA in 2017, he said African leaders still had the opportunity to set it up by March 2018.

Justifying Nigeria’s vote for the CFTA, the President said: “In a rapidly changing global economy, with much uncertainty, we believe that the establishment of a CFTA would provide Africa with tremendous opportunity to achieve significant growth driven by intra-African trade.”

According to him, while the stakes in setting up CFTA are no doubt very high, the benefits are wide-ranging and significant.

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has told youths of the state that it is better to be thieves than to smoke weed.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Friday January 26th depart Nigeria for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to participate in the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

The highlight of the President’s engagements during the visit will be his Statement under the historic theme for the AU Summit, namely: “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.

A statement by the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says this is the first time in the 54-year history of the AU that anti-corruption will be made a theme of the gathering of the regional leaders.

It would be recalled that on July 4, 2017 during the 29th Session of the AU, African leaders unanimously endorsed President Buhari to champion the fight against corruption on the continent. Witches are not responsible for road accidents – FRSC

Witches are not responsible for road accidents ? FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has attributed most road crashes on Nigerian roads to human factors and not witchcraft as believed by some people in the country.

According to Sector Commander of the corps in Imo, Mr Joseph Aremu, he advised motorists in the country to always stick to traffic rules and obey all road signs.  Aremu said that contrary to belief by some Nigerians that road crashes was a manipulation of witches, major causes of most auto crashes were over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and bad tyres.

According to him, a driver will lose sense of judgment if he decides to drive under the influence of alcohol and when the right judgment is lost, the next result is auto crash. The commander said that the corps in Imo were doing everything possible to ensure that road users stick to traffic rule, adding that the command will go tough on traffic offenders.

Aremu said that though road crashes had reduced in the state, the FRSC would continue to partner with relevant sister agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the road was safe for all.
