polytechnic students

Police officers from the Ondo state police command shot three Polytechnic students. The victims were students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO), Ondo. The ugly incident occurred on Sunday, June 19 Information had it that the Polytechnic students were mistakenly shot when some students of RUGIPO clashed with the school authority and some police officers.

The students were fortunate not to have died from the gunshot, as they are said to be in good condition at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, where they were being treated.
A person who pleaded anonymity explained that the said problem started when a policeman hit two students with his private car and abandoned them. The unnamed source said: “When the policeman hit the two students, he did not stop to show sympathy. “This was what led other students to embark on a protest to the B Division Police Station at Otapete. “But they were dispersed by the police with teargas and sporadic shooting in the air. In the process, three students were accidentally hit by bullets.”

National mirror gathered that the Polytechnic students later closed down the Owo/Akure Highway, which created a huge traffic for several hours, thereby stopping people from leaving the ancient town. According to the Ondo state police public relations officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph, he said the Rufus Giwa students attacked a divisional police officer (DPO) named Akande, stating that the officer was in critical condition. Joseph said: “The two students were not deliberately hit by the police officer with his vehicle. It was a total lie that the driver abandoned the students because he immediately took the victims to a hospital and they are currently receiving treatment.” The Head of the Polytechnic Information Protocol and Public Relations Unit, Olumide Olugosi, said they were happy none of the student died during the fracas.

Olugosi also stated that one of the injured students was later referred to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ife, Osun state, for further evaluation and treatment. It was in the same Ondo state about a week ago that report from Akure, the capital of Ondo state revealed that at least five suspected kidnappers met their waterloo, as they were apprehended by men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
